BACKGROUND

As LACAP began to develop as an organization in 2004-2005, it became more and more apparent that there was a need to look for tangible ways to express the relation between artists and community. This idea has been expressed in our slogan: Supporting the Arts. This means the development of new presentation platforms, it means lobbying for better working and living conditions for all artists, but it also means supporting and fostering the development of new local Latin American artists.

In 2005 the Toronto District School Board presented a report stating that Toronto's Latin American community has one of the highest high-school drop-out rates (39%), together with the Afro-Canadian and Portuguese communities. This is when we decide to begin looking at the possibility of establishing bursaries that would help Latin American youth enrolled in a high-school program continue post-secondary studies in the arts if they wished to.

We are happy to announce that on December 1, 2008, LACAP has launched two scholarships.

The Osvaldo Reyes Scholarship will support a Latin American high-school student wanting to continue post-secondary studies in Drawing and Painting, and the Roque Dalton Scholarship will support a Latin American high-school student wanting to continue post-secondary studies in the Literary Arts. The Osvaldo Reyes Scholarship is made possible through LACAP and the Roque Dalton Scholarship is made possible thanks to the generous donation of Camilo Barreda and Tomas Barreda-Toledo.

We hope this small beginning will, in time, become a significant contribution to a future generation of Latin American-Canadian artists. Please help us promote this program through your contacts and friends
