PAST EVENTS 2011 / 2010 / 2009 Organization of Latin American Students (OLAS) University of Toronto ANNOUNCING THE SOUNDS OF SOLIDARITY (SOS) CHARITY CONCERT 2009 Avancemos Juntos (Succeeding Together) Campaign On March 20, 2009, OLAS is having their annual charity event. The goal of this event is to increase awareness of the rising high school dropout rate that is affecting the young Latino population in Toronto and to fund existing local organizations that help in this cause. The night will feature local artists displaying the Latin American culture through live music, dance, and folklore. All proceeds from this event will be donated to our Avancemos Juntos campaign, which will promote social services such as scholarships, mentoring and tutoring to Latino high school students in Toronto. The date, time and price of the event is the following: Friday, March 20 2009 7:00 pm-11:30 pm Doors open at 7:00 pm Show starts at 8:00 pm $15 in advance $18 at the door It will take place at York Woods Library Theatre, 1785 Finch Ave. W. Toronto. The venue is wheelchair accessible. The charities associated with the event are SALO, ALIDDESA and LACAP. The event is sponsored by the following: the Latin American Studies Department at the University of Toronto, Plaza Flamingo, The Hispanic Development Council, Anthony Perruzza City of Toronto Councillor (Ward 8), and Hispanic Roots (Omni Television). Murray's photography is a personal and historical documentation of Allende's Pupular Unity gorvernment (1970-1973) expanding on CONTACT's 2009 theme Still Revolution. April 2009 First International Poetry Festival in Solidarity with the Cuban Five (political prisoners in the U.S.) LACAP is supporting this important local event and will be participating with an urban intervention. April 2009 Hispanic-Canadian and Indigenous Heritage Month, LACAP is co-signer of the formal petition to have April officially declared Hispanic-Canadian and Indigenous Heritage Month. LACAP will be supporting this heritage celebration initiative of several local Latin American organizations and individuals through various events throughout the month of April. Escola de Capoeira Filhos de Bimba and LACAP are working on this one-day event that will feature the special visit of Mestre Nenel from Salvador da Bahia, Brasil. Mestre Nenel is the son of Mestre Bimba and founder of the Filhos de Bimba Capoeira School. Events will include Capoeira workshops, talks and a Roda.
